For sufferers of depression and suicidal ideation, Kalypso Ketamine™ may save lives

Ketamine was first used as an anesthetic some 50 years ago, and in smaller doses it works to ease physical pain. When taken in larger doses, ketamine has been known to cause the user to experience hallucinations, thus making it a popular recreational drug over the decades.

In the last 20 years, another use of ketamine has been discovered that may literally save lives—combatting depression and suicidal ideation.

Many studies have been conducted since then to determine just how effective ketamine is as an antidepressant, and scientists have found that when it works, it works quickly. Antidepressants generally take weeks before users feel the effects; when ketamine is taken, either intravenously or with a nasal spray, it often takes effect in a matter of hours.

Much is still unknown as to how exactly ketamine works to counter the effects of depression and suicidal ideation, but scientists believe that ketamine blocks neural bursts in a part of the brain known as the LHb that are believed to cause depression.

Kalypso Wellness Centers, founded in 2016 by four board certified anesthesiologists, has seized upon the concept of using ketamine as an alternative treatment for anxiety and depression and taken it to the next level.

“Kalypso does not use a ‘one size fits all’ approach to treating our patients. Kalypso’s proprietary formulations are designed for a specific disease state, and tailored to the individual patient’s needs at the time of treatment. In other words, we may give more or less ketamine depending on the severity of the patient’s condition on treatment day.”

Patients reported the following benefits after ketamine infusion:

  • Less pain
  • More hopeful
  • Increased calmness
  • Depression is reduced
  • Improved relationships

The trick is finding a balance between taking a large enough dose of ketamine to fight the depression but small enough to avoid its side effects. Kalypso’s patients often report an increase in efficacy and decrease in side effects when they use ketamine.

“Scientists continue to research and debate the effectiveness of ketamine in treating depression and suicidal ideation. But we can’t argue with the positive results we’ve seen day in and day out in our wellness centers.  These results are not a hallucination! Kalypso’s success rate with these proprietary ketamine formulations is 90 percent, much higher than the national average of between 60 and 70 percent. Meanwhile, patients reported an adverse reaction rate of just 5 percent after Kalypso’s ketamine treatments, compared to a national average of between 50 and 60 percent. Not only that, but we cover a wide range of afflictions—our proprietary formulations treat 31 disease states.” says COO Ryan Bridges.

While research on the exact functioning of ketamine in the brain continues, Kalypso Wellness Centers hopes to bring their cutting edge technology to the forefront of mental health treatment while continuing to improve, and possibly save, the lives of their patients.
